container gardening grasses
Plant Cherry Tomatoes?
I have a good sunny backyard, but it is mostly grass, how can I plant Cherry tomatoes, I bought 2 containers with 6 small stems, I also bought soil, do I have to remove the grass, and if yes how (I know nothing about gardening and need lot of info). Also do they have to be next to the fence? or anyplace?
Thanks
Thank you
Yes, you will have to remove the grass. Keep them in full sun. They don’t need to be against a fence BUT you need stakes about 4 or 5 feet tall. You will have to tie off the tomato plants every foot or so when they are growing so they don’t fall over onto the ground. To tie off them I cut up old shirts and socks. To remove the grass you could use a rototiller (it basically chews up the ground though I have a feeling you aren’t supposed to use them on grass). A shovel and metal rake will work well enough. You’ll have to chop up the ground well so it is not “hard”. Adding fertilizer will help but don’t ovefertilize. You can start a composting pile somewhere. To plant dig a hole deep enough for the whole “block of soil” with the tomato plant can fit in the hole. Do not cover any of the holes. Just cover over the “block of soil” with the dirt you dug up. Add a light layer of grass clippings every once in a while over your garden.
Good luck. And cherry tomatoes are amazing!!!
